An eye for an eye, across the law codes
The motif beneath the words: the response shall mirror the injury, no more and no less.
The oldest saying in the corpus is a law: the response shall mirror the injury. Modern ears hear escalation; for most of its four thousand years it was a CAP, one eye and not a life, not a clan war. This workup follows the rule through five codes and watches it soften as it is carried down the lineage: priced in silver for unequal parties from its very first attestation, given a buyout clause in Rome, granted remission in the Quran, and finally reread by the rabbis until the eye means the eye's value in money. The mirror and the purse travel together the whole way.
One rule, two polarities
The response shall mirror the injury, no more and no less: measured retribution as law. Its historical function was a ceiling on vengeance (one eye, not a life, not a feud), which inverts the modern ear's reading of it as license.
the mirror: like for like
the purse: like for worth
Descent, theft, and arrival
Every carrier, mapped. Gold lines are descent: a single lineage, many witnesses, one testimony. Dashed rose lines are borrowings, marked and kept, because a borrowed echo is still an echo. Teal rings stand alone: tongues that arrived on their own. Slate dashed rings wait at a dating gate: unknowns counted as unknowns, never as wonder and never as loans.
How surprised should we be?
5 tongues sounds like 5 witnesses. It is not. Traditions inherit, neighbours copy, and the instrument's first honest act is to count again. The count that matters is lineages, not languages; Echo's signed scorer asks one question: how many independent lineages is this, really?
- vocabulary-claude's proposition-keying annotation pass (amends; includes the track call and the in-kind/in-value polarity vocabulary)
- critical-edition passes: Roth's Hammurabi rendering (borrow-walled at verification), the Masoretic text loci, the Twelve Tables' modern critical numbering (Crawford), Bava Kamma 84a (the range cite; load-bearing quotes verified on 83b only)
- the open convergence question: measured-mirror retribution in legal traditions outside the Near-Eastern/Mediterranean contact zone (dharmasastra discussions are a candidate; nothing curated, nothing coded absent)
- the Rome transmission gate: Near East to Twelve Tables legal transmission scholarship
- suite satellites from batch D, gates owed before joining: 'eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' (Gandhi-attributed; real trail Graham 1914/Fischer 1950) and 'violence begets violence'
- cross-payload relation for design's constellation stretch goal: counter_saying_of links this card to turn-the-other-cheek
Who told whom
Each tree is one lineage: one testimony, however many witnesses carry it. Gold branches are descent within a tradition; rose dashed branches are marked borrowings. The rings that stand alone below are the arrivals: nobody told them.
Contested kinship: Akkadian and Biblical Hebrew may share an older parent; scholarship has not settled it, so their lineages are drawn apart and counted apart.
A curated gathering in the spirit of Echo: grouped by the image each tongue reaches for, not by the words, with each saying's lineage named honestly. Where one tongue copied another it is marked, not hidden. Transliterations are approximate guides to sound. Per-entry curator confidences are shown with each saying; everything is provisional until the owed checks clear.
