The oldest saying in the corpus is a law: the response shall mirror the injury. Modern ears hear escalation; for most of its four thousand years it was a CAP, one eye and not a life, not a clan war. This workup follows the rule through five codes and watches it soften as it is carried down the lineage: priced in silver for unequal parties from its very first attestation, given a buyout clause in Rome, granted remission in the Quran, and finally reread by the rabbis until the eye means the eye's value in money. The mirror and the purse travel together the whole way.

Act I · the decomposition

One rule, two polarities

The response shall mirror the injury, no more and no less: measured retribution as law. Its historical function was a ceiling on vengeance (one eye, not a life, not a feud), which inverts the modern ear's reading of it as license.

The polarity split
The formulation splits between the mirror (repayment in kind, on the body) and the purse (repayment in value, in silver or damages). The split is NOT a story of ancient harshness softening into modern mercy: the purse is co-attested with the mirror in the very first document, applied across class lines, then appears inside the Roman wording as a buyout clause, and finally swallows the rule whole in the rabbinic rereading, where the canonical words stand and the meaning moves. Both polarities are kept as distinct records; the migration between them is the finding.
Traditions as families
Tradition-blocks collapse before counting, as on every proposition card. The Abrahamic chain (Torah, Quran, Talmud) is one inheritance: the Quran names the Torah outright, and the Talmud rereads it. The Babylonian code stands apart, joined to the Hebrew text only by a CONTESTED kinship: scholarship's consensus is a shared Near-Eastern legal tradition, not documented borrowing, and the contested edge never collapses independence. Rome waits at its transmission gate. The honest open question the gates still owe: whether measured-mirror retribution arises in legal traditions wholly outside this Near-Eastern and Mediterranean world (pre-contact China, India, the Americas), where nothing is yet curated and nothing is coded absent.

Descent, theft, and arrival

How surprised should we be?

5 tongues sounds like 5 witnesses. It is not. Traditions inherit, neighbours copy, and the instrument's first honest act is to count again. The count that matters is lineages, not languages; Echo's signed scorer asks one question: how many independent lineages is this, really?

Three scriptures, one arrival: Torah, Quran, and Talmud are a single self-citing inheritance and count once. Babylon counts separately: the contested kinship to the Hebrew text is rendered as dotted kinship and never merges components, because independence is not collapsed on a disputed claim.
