An Echo workup · one truism, in full

A piece of cake,
in many tongues

“It's a piece of cake.”

The motif beneath the words: a task is trivially easy.

When a task costs nothing, the tongues refuse to share a picture: cake in English, eaten bread in Spanish, chicken soup in Portuguese, a little egg in Dutch, a child's game, fingers in the nose, a steamed turnip, a dollop. The meaning is near-universal and the images never agree. This workup is the honest null: an instrument that can only manufacture wonder would be lying here, and the finding is the scatter itself.

verdict: divergence
Act I · the decomposition

The schema that is not there

Vocabulary's annotation, adopted in full: 'easy' is an act that meets no resistance, the absence of S9 BLOCKAGE and S11 COUNTERFORCE, and image schemas encode present structure, so an absence yields no shared positive schema. The food, play, and one-off groups carry schema-TBD, flagged and not forced; the gesture group rates a weak S2 at most, marked low-confidence; the Italian walk a weak S2 SOURCE-PATH-GOAL. What every entry shares is function alone: F05 OBSERVE/DESCRIBE primary (appraise the task as trivially easy), F08 CONSOLE/COMFORT secondary (reassure someone who is daunted).

The level of this echo
The tongues agree on the point and on nothing above it. Ease is the absence of resistance, and an absence gives the mind no picture to converge on, so every culture grabs whatever lies nearest: a dessert, a finished meal, a child at play, idle fingers, a stroll, a turnip. The level of this echo is the pragmatic function and only the function: no shared schema, no shared filler, and one soft pull toward food that converges on the domain alone. Where two birds with one stone shows the tongues reaching for a single spine, this motif shows them scattering, and the instrument must say so as plainly as it says wonder. Not everything echoes; that is the finding.

the simple meal

food / ingestion
filler: cake / eaten bread / chicken soup / a little egg
The one partial pull in the motif: several tongues reach for food as the image of ease. Even here the foods differ (cake, bread, soup, egg), so the convergence is on the filler domain only. The schema slot is TBD, flagged and not forced: 'consume simple food' is a filler frame, not an image schema.

child's play

play
filler: a child's play / a child's game
What a child does, as the measure of what costs nothing. Schema TBD: play is not an image schema, and the flag is a finding, not a gap. No shared source for the German and French forms is documented, and none is ruled out.

the effortless gesture

effortless body gesture
filler: fingers in the nose / two fingers
Ease as a body so unburdened that the hands are free to be idle. A weak S2 at most, marked low-confidence by the annotator; the Russian form is vulgar in register, flagged on the record.

the one-offs

true scatter, one image per tongue
filler: a walk / sewing and singing / a steamed turnip / a dollop
Four tongues, four images, nothing shared: a stroll, needlework light enough to sing over, the humblest dish in the pantry, a splat of something soft. The true scatter, and the heart of the finding.
Act II · the lineage

Descent, theft, and arrival

Every carrier, mapped. Gold lines are descent: a single lineage, many witnesses, one testimony. Dashed rose lines are borrowings, marked and kept, because a borrowed echo is still an echo. Teal rings stand alone: tongues that arrived on their own. Slate dashed rings wait at a dating gate: unknowns counted as unknowns, never as wonder and never as loans.

anchor cognate descent borrowed, marked independent arrival at the gate descent borrowing
Act III · the measurement

How surprised should we be?

8 tongues sounds like 8 witnesses. It is not. Families inherit, neighbours copy, and the instrument's first honest act is to count again. The count that matters is lineages, not languages; Echo's signed scorer asks one question: how many independent lineages is this, really?

surprisal = −log P(recurrence | Neff),   Neff = 1TΣ−11
Tier B · naïve
8
Every tongue counted as independent. Σ = I. An upper bound, and an honest lie.
Tier C · families collapsed
3
One voice per family block: Germanic, Italic/Romance, Slavic.
Tier C‑plus · topology
awaiting O3
Glottolog topology Σ, ridged. The store is data‑claude's build; no number is shown before the machine computes it.
the simple meal
4 of 5 (+1 gated)
five tongues, four arrivals plus one candidate at the gate: the foods differ (cake, bread, soup, egg), so the pull is on the domain, never the dish
child's play
2 of 2
two tongues, two arrivals as curated: no shared source is documented, and none is ruled out
the effortless gesture
2 of 2
two tongues, two arrivals: a nose in France, two fingers in Russia (vulgar register, flagged), barely a schema between them
the one-offs
4 of 4
four tongues, four arrivals, four unshared images: the scatter at its purest
tongues carrying the image independent arrivals candidates at the gates
Almost nothing here collapses, because almost nothing here connects: a divergence motif has no chains to discount. The single candidate is the French cake, possibly a calque of the English, possibly an independent reach for the same dessert; the sources do not commit, so it waits at the dating gate and counts as a candidate, not an arrival. Marked, never hidden.
Honest label. Curated by ekkko 2026-06-09 and annotated by vocabulary-claude the same day; the annotation confirms the divergence triage at the schema level, not just the etymology level, and the schema-TBD flags on three of the four groups are carried as findings, not gaps to paper over. The French cake is held at the gate rather than counted or collapsed: the sources flag it as a possible English calque without committing, and its 75 is the entry confidence, not a confidence in independence. Native script was restored by the curator from the source's romanizations for the two Russian entries and the accented Portuguese, Italian, and French forms (restoration confidence about 95); transliterations are sound guides. All per-entry confidences are pre-verification curator numbers. countable structure, not computed Echo scores. Still owed before anything here leaves provisional:
  • native-speaker pass on every foreign entry; register check on the Russian gesture form (vulgar, flagged)
  • the French cake's dating gate: calque of English, or an independent food image
  • dated first attestation for the English anchor (~1930s; RAF slang or cakewalk, unverified)
  • a shared European source for the child's-play pair (German, French) is neither documented nor ruled out
  • unlisted languages are not coded absent: many unsampled tongues will carry their own image of ease, and each new one is expected to widen the scatter, not close it
Act IV · the lineages, drawn

Who told whom

Each tree is one lineage: one testimony, however many witnesses carry it. Gold branches are descent within a family; rose dashed branches are marked borrowings. The rings that stand alone below are the arrivals: nobody told them.

A curated gathering in the spirit of Echo: grouped by the image each tongue reaches for, not by the words, with each saying's lineage named honestly. Where one tongue copied another it is marked, not hidden. Transliterations are approximate guides to sound. Per-entry curator confidences are shown with each saying; everything is provisional until the owed checks clear.
