An Echo workup · one truism, in full

Still waters,
in many tongues

“Still waters run deep.”

The motif beneath the words: the quiet surface hides the depth.

Ten tongues agree that the quiet one is the deep one, and most of that agreement is a schoolbook: the Disticha Catonis, the universal medieval Latin primer, carried the calm river into nearly every European vernacular, and the Middle English attestation literally sits inside a Cato translation. Even the classical witness disclaims authorship: Curtius offers the deepest-rivers line as a saying of the Bactrians, so the root of the European chain points east toward a source no one can recover. Against that single inheritance stand genuine arrivals: a Japanese poem of about 905 reaching the identical image with no plausible road to the Latin, a Chinese bottle, a Persian warning with no water in it, and a Russian pool where the devils live. The verdict is mixed, and the count is honest only after the chain is folded to one.

Act I · the decomposition

Depth beneath the still surface

Vocabulary-claude's keying is owed; this payload precedes the annotation pass and asserts no S-codes. Described informally: a vertical depth axis read off a horizontal surface, with an inverse correlation between sound and depth doing the inferential work, surface signs concealing the interior. The satellite clusters keep the inference and swap the machinery: a hidden inhabitant (devils), dormancy as threat (sleeping), silent erosion (banks), container fullness (vessel), and finally the person with no image at all. Function is character-judgment warning, used both admiringly and as caution.

The level of this echo
This echo lives at three levels at once, which is what mixed means. In Europe the agreement runs all the way down to the filler, river and depth and silence, and that totality is a pedigree: one Latin schoolbook radiating for a millennium, with even its classical witness disclaiming authorship toward Bactria. Japan reaches the identical image independently, depth silent and shallows loud, which is convergence at the level of the image itself; China's bottle and Persia's quiet one converge only at the pragmatic shape, quiet predicting substance or menace and noise predicting neither, under entirely different images. The level of this echo must be named per arrival, and the headline is honest only because it is.

deep water runs silent

the river: depth and sound
filler: deep river + least sound / calm surface + hidden depth / shallow rapids + idle waves
The core image family: the depth-to-silence correlation read off real rivers, with the quiet person mapped onto the deep water. Europe states it from the deep side, the Japanese poem from the noisy shallows; the menace reading is the older one in the European chain (Cato: avoid the silent; Shakespeare: he harbours treason).

devils in the still pool

water-demon folklore
filler: still pool + devils dwelling
The danger is not depth itself but what lives in the quiet: native Slavic water-demon folklore, the omut whirlpool as home of the chert and the vodyanoy, filling the same pragmatic slot. Kept distinct per the gathering: this deserves its own motif record, not collapse into the depth image.

the water that sleeps

dormancy as danger
filler: sleeping water + worst water
A pure danger form: depth is never mentioned, only the dormant water as the worst water. It is carried from the same Latin schoolroom as the depth cluster, which makes it this payload's one cross-cluster edge.

quiet water tears the banks

erosion: hidden force
filler: quiet water + torn banks
Still water as slow hidden agency: it does not merely hide depth, it erodes while silent. A Slavic areal form whose independence from the Latin chain is unresolved; it waits at the gate.

the full vessel is silent

the container: fullness and noise
filler: full bottle + stillness / half bottle + slosh
Container instead of water body: fullness is silent, half-emptiness makes the noise. The same judgment of quiet substance against loud shallowness, reached through an entirely different image.

fear the quiet one

person-direct: no image
filler: the loud one + harmless din / the quiet one + lowered head
The shape with the imagery stripped away: fear not the one who makes a din, fear the one whose head is down toward you. No water, no vessel, just the warning itself.
Act II · the lineage

Descent, theft, and arrival

Every carrier, mapped. Gold lines are descent: a single lineage, many witnesses, one testimony. Dashed rose lines are borrowings, marked and kept, because a borrowed echo is still an echo. Teal rings stand alone: tongues that arrived on their own. Slate dashed rings wait at a dating gate: unknowns counted as unknowns, never as wonder and never as loans.

Act III · the measurement

How surprised should we be?

10 tongues sounds like 10 witnesses. It is not. Families inherit, neighbours copy, and the instrument's first honest act is to count again. The count that matters is lineages, not languages; Echo's signed scorer asks one question: how many independent lineages is this, really?

deep water runs silent
2 of 8
eight witnesses, two arrivals: the Latin school chain wearing six costumes (its Chinese calque marked as the loan it is) and the Japanese poem, alone and centuries early
devils in the still pool
1 of 1
one tongue, one arrival, leaning independent: native water-demon folklore filling a shared slot; the contact-path analysis is owed
the water that sleeps
0 of 1
one tongue, NO separate arrival: the sleeping water is carried from the same Latin schoolroom and joins the depth chain's component
quiet water tears the banks
0 of 1 (+1 gated)
one tongue at the gate: the erosion form's independence from the Latin chain is unresolved, so it takes nothing
the full vessel is silent
1 of 1
one tongue, one arrival: the bottle reaches the shape through fullness, not water, on a Qing-era citation held at relay confidence
fear the quiet one
1 of 1
one tongue, one arrival: the quiet one with no image at all, and the Bactrian question breathing behind it
tongues carrying the image independent arrivals candidates at the gates
The European web is one chain, not six arrivals: two Latin witnesses, three stages of English, the German, the French sleeping water (whose cluster joins the chain's component across cluster lines, taking no separate arrival), and the modern Chinese calque marked as a borrow at the chain's end. The Polish erosion form waits at the contact-path gate and takes nothing. What remains counted: the Latin chain once, the Japanese poem, the Russian pool, the Chinese bottle, the Persian quiet one. And one disclaimer hangs over the root itself: Curtius says the Bactrians said it first, an attribution resting on his word alone. Marked, never hidden.
Honest label. Fleet-curated gathering, anti-confabulation checked 2026-06-10: seven spot-checks, no fabrications found, gathering-level corrected confidence 90. Repairs and flags carried into this payload: the source-vs-memory correction on Curtius (quotation dictionaries circulate 'labuntur'; the transmitted text in context is the infinitive 'labi', and the verified sentence carries the Bactrian attribution and the timid-dog proverb in the same breath); the L'Estrange 1692 collection citation stays relay-only, and the fetched ODP-derived dictionary lists Kelly 1721 as 'Smooth Waters run deep', so the modern form's collection-history gloss keeps a strengthened relay flag; the Chinese bottle's Jinghua Yuan ch. 23 attribution is corroborated only via a second relay, its claimed Song-dynasty Chan precedent could not be verified, and its confidence is held at 78, not raised; the Japanese poem is quoted in modernized orthography while the Kotobank witness prints kana and kanji variants, a witness-form note any corpus store must keep. The check corroborated the Middle English line verbatim with a c. 1400 citation (resolving c. 1300 versus c. 1400 toward 1400); its confidence is carried at the seed's 70, not raised. The Bactrian attribution splits in two: that Curtius reports it is verified (92); that it reflects a real Bactrian saying is unverifiable, below 50, could not verify. The Dutch 17th-century form and the Czech and Russian erosion parallels rest on single tertiary witnesses and are named in lit fields rather than given rows. countable structure, not computed Echo scores. Still owed before anything here leaves provisional:
  • null model: the base rate of water-depth/silence pairings in unrelated proverb corpora, before the Japanese convergence is treated as surprising (water and quietness may be a near-universal observable)
  • surprisal score in bits for the cross-family recurrences (data-claude scorer)
  • look-elsewhere correction: this motif was searched for directly, so the hit must be penalized against the space of motifs that could have been searched
  • final provenance adjudication per attestation: the hypotheses here are curator-level, not scored; the Slavic bank-erosion gate and the Russian devils contact-path analysis especially
  • critical-edition verification of the Middle English Cato's Morals line and the Kelly 1721 / L'Estrange 1692 collection citations (relay-only; the check's Kelly-wording discrepancy sharpens this)
  • direct fetch of the Baidu Baike and Abadis pages (both currently relay-corroborated only) and the unverified Song-dynasty Chan precedent behind the bottle proverb
  • source-license check before any wording enters the corpus store (Wiktionary CC-BY-SA flag to legal-claude per seat brief)

A curated gathering in the spirit of Echo: grouped by the image each tongue reaches for, not by the words, with each saying's lineage named honestly. Where one tongue copied another it is marked, not hidden. Transliterations are approximate guides to sound. Per-entry curator confidences are shown with each saying; everything is provisional until the owed checks clear.
